Diabetic Foot Care
At Advanced Bone & Joint in St. Peters, O'Fallon, & Wentzville Missouri, board-certified foot and ankle surgeon Dr. Anthony Lombardo offers a multitude of surgical approaches to treating various foot and ankle wounds, including trauma, burns, diabetic foot, and other complications of diabetes that can affect the feet and legs.
Diabetes-related foot problems, such as ulcers or sores, are most frequently caused by infection. Foot wounds can be difficult to heal, especially if you have diabetic neuropathy (nerve damage in the legs and feet). The added pressure of your body weight may also complicate foot problems.
Diabetic foot disease is a serious condition that must be evaluated and treated by a trained and competent specialist. Because your feet are located relatively far from your heart, poor blood circulation as a result of peripheral artery disease can also prevent wounds from healing.
Without proper care, foot wounds can fester and quickly progress to tissue death (gangrene) that requires amputation in order to stop the life-threatening spread of infection.
Wound Care Clinic in St. Peters, O'Fallon & Wentzville, MO
The orthopedic experts at Advanced Bone & Joint are proud to offer comprehensive wound care services on-site at all our St. Peters, O'Fallon, & Wentzville locations.
This includes negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) for our diabetic patients. In NPWT, a wound is covered with an airtight vacuum dressing connected to a pump. Negative pressure helps to pull and remove fluid from inside the wound and stimulate blood flow to the area to help the wound heal properly and close.
If NPWT or other conservative wound treatments are not successful, foot surgery, including skin grafts, may be recommended for a nonhealing wound.
