Understanding Plantar Fasciitis Treatment Options

September 15, 2023

Plantar fasciitis is a chronic inflammatory health issue affecting the connective tissue between the heel bone and the ball of the foot. The plantar fascia forms and supports the arch of the foot, and if this tissue is overstretched, pain, swelling, and poor mobility result.

Let’s discuss the symptoms of plantar fasciitis, your treatment options, and where you can go for this treatment in St. Charles County, Missouri.

Plantar Fasciitis Symptoms

Plantar fasciitis is a very common and highly treatable condition seen and treated by podiatrists across the United States. In fact, about two million people are affected by it each and every year.

The symptoms of plantar fasciitis are:

  • A continual ache along the arch of the foot
  • Heel pain and swelling
  • Pain and extreme stiffness upon waking up in the morning
  • Relief with movement but quick return of pain and stiffness at rest
  • Stiffness associated with the Achilles tendon, which runs from the calf muscle to the heel
  • Formation of bony heel spurs

People who are obese or have suddenly gained a lot of weight–as during pregnancy–may develop plantar fasciitis. So do athletes, such as runners and volleyball players, because of the repetitive motions and extreme forces exerted along the bottom of the feet.  Sitting still or standing in one place for an extended period of time can contribute to this foot problem, as can wearing shoes with poor arch support.

Diagnosis and Treatment Options for Plantar Fasciitis

Persistent arch pain and swelling warrant examination and treatment with your podiatrist in O’Fallon. Expect a hands-on examination of your feet and ankles, a discussion of your symptoms (and what you may have done to relieve them), and an imaging assessment, such as digital X-rays or even an MRI.

If you are diagnosed with plantar fasciitis, don’t worry. For most people, surgical release of the plantar fascia is unnecessary. Simpler interventions work well, giving patients the relief they need and tools they can use to keep their feet pain-free and functional.

Here are some of the most common treatment options.

RICE

RICE stands for rest, ice, compression, and elevation. This reliable first-aid treatment plan works well for many people who have mild to moderate plantar fasciitis symptoms.

So, rest your feet after prolonged use. Ice the arch of the foot to alleviate swelling. Wear an ACE bandage for support, and elevate your feet to reduce inflammation.

Weight Control

Keep within the ideal body weight range to reduce undue pressure on the feet and ankles. Frankly, even a moderate loss of 10 pounds can benefit the comfort and function of your lower extremities and lessen–or even eliminate–the pain and swelling of plantar fasciitis.

Orthotics and Other Supportive Devices

Podiatrists offer customized shoe inserts called orthotics. These devices deliver support and correct gait problems, such as over pronation, contributing to many foot and ankle conditions, including plantar fasciitis.

Also, many patients get relief from plantar fasciitis by wearing corrective splints at night as they sleep. These splints provide a gentle arch stretch, reducing morning pain and stiffness.

Cortisone Injections

Cortisone is an anti-inflammatory medication. Injected directly into the plantar fascia, it temporarily relieves swelling associated with plantar fasciitis. Many people also benefit from taking over-the-counter NSAIDS to control inflammation and discomfort.

Well-constructed Footwear

Choose shoes that are appropriate for the activity. If you are a runner, select shoes with quality materials that deliver excellent arch support.

If you are a construction worker, wear work boots that will protect your feet from injury and give your arches and heels the cushioning and support you need on hard surfaces, such as concrete, all day long. Ask your podiatrist for a footwear recommendation best suited to your foot and ankle structure.

Carol Owen

A+ experience from start to finish. The staff in the waiting area are very capable and personable. The wait time is short and my most recent visit was my third time there with the third specialist. I have been a patient of Dr. Frisella, Dr. Glissom and now Dr. Fallon. I always rave about their knowledge, expertise and care. I recommend them to all my friends, and give them a five star recommendation to all!

Alma Gayle

Everyone was great and Dr Spezia is my kind of Doctor! Thorough, and a great upbeat personality!
