Dr. Nicholas Zarkadis is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in total joint replacement. Based in Missouri, he brings extensive experience in managing complex sports injuries and orthopedic trauma.
His interests currently lie in muscle-sparing anterior total hip replacement, advanced robotic-assisted joint replacement, and rapid recovery protocols for hip and knee surgery.
Originally from St. Charles, Missouri, Dr. Zarkadis graduated from Truman State University with a bachelor of science in Biology, where he played NCAA Division II varsity soccer. He earned his medical degree with honors from Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at William Beaumont Army Medical Center/Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center— the U.S. Army’s only combined orthopedic surgery training program. During his residency, he served as Chief Resident, where he led academic curriculum development, mentored fellow residents, and advanced research initiatives. He was awarded the Raymond J. Bagg, M.D. Award for excellence in orthopedic training. He then went on to complete a fellowship in Adult Hip and Knee Reconstruction at the University of Missouri in Columbia.
Dr. Zarkadis was commissioned into the U.S. Army as a Medical Corps Officer, following medical school. His military education includes the Army Medical Department Basic Officer Leadership Course, Combat Casualty Care Course, Combat Extremity Surgery Course, and the Sabulauski Air Assault and Pathfinder Schools. He was stationed at Fort Campbell, serving as the orthopedic surgeon for the 5th Special Forces Group, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, and 101st Airborne Division. Dr. Zarkadis was twice selected to participate in U.S. Army medical readiness missions to Honduras and deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Freedom’s Sentinel as part of a Forward Resuscitative Surgical Team (FRST).
His military awards include the Bronze Star Medal and multiple military honors. He continues to serve in the U.S. Army Reserve as a Medical Corps Officer assigned to a Forward Resuscitative and Surgical Detachment (FRSD).
Dr. Zarkadis is an active contributor to orthopedic research and education. He has authored and edited numerous peer-reviewed publications and presented his work at national and international conferences.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Zarkadis enjoys spending time with his wife and three children. He also likes playing soccer, cooking, and supporting our St. Louis sports teams.
