Common Types of Orthopedic Surgery

February 18, 2022

Dealing with a musculoskeletal injury or condition is always tricky, especially when discomfort from your problem keeps you off your daily activities and makes you search for an orthopedic surgeon to evaluate your condition. Things get scarier when your orthopedic surgeon mentions the possibility for orthopedic surgery.

With that being said, you will also feel relieved after knowing that you are not the only candidate for orthopedic surgery, but that the procedure has been performed so many times on other candidates.

Most orthopedic surgeries are relatively safe, even though they come with a few risks. Orthopedic surgeries that are performed most commonly have a high success rate.

Let’s talk about these common orthopedic surgeries and how they can relieve your pain.

Most Common Types Of Orthopedic Surgeries

The most common types of orthopedic surgeries performed by your orthopedic surgeon provide relief and improve your quality of life. These include:

Bone Fracture Repair Surgery

When you fracture your bone, bone fracture repair surgery is performed to prevent your bone pieces from healing in an unusual position. Typically, most of your broken bones heal on their own with cast or immobilization. But when complex bones get fractures, they split into multiple small and large pieces, which can become misaligned. To prevent the healing of these bone pieces, it is important that your orthopedic surgeon correctly align bone pieces as soon as the fracture occurs. Your orthopedic surgeon will use screws, pins, or plates to reposition the fractured pieces.

When bone fracture repair surgery is not performed in a timely manner, it can result in lifelong problems with function and mobility.

Joint Replacement Surgery

At first, it may be worrying to hear that your own joint will be replaced by an artificial joint. But it is the best course of action when there is no other option available to provide your relief and improve your mobility at the same time. Your orthopedic surgeon will remove your joint and replace it with an artificial joint or prosthetic. This prosthetic that will take the place of your damaged bony joint is usually made of ceramic, metal, or plastic. Prosthetics help you regain the movement and functions that you had before your joint was damaged. Your orthopedic surgeon can replace any of your joint – knee, shoulder, hip, or elbow joint.

Arthroscopy

In arthroscopy, your orthopedic surgeon uses an arthroscope – a device having a long and thin camera –to diagnose your joint condition and treat it. Your orthopedic surgeon will insert this device into your joint after making a small incision. When diagnosed, your surgeon will use thin and small instruments to fix your problem.

Arthroscopic surgeries are minimally invasive yet are the most common type of surgery performed in the United States. If you have an ACL tear, meniscus tear, or rotator cuff tear, your orthopedic surgeon will perform arthroscopy surgery.

Spinal Fusion

You can have back pain due to an unlimited number of causes. You can live with minor back pains, but it becomes unbearable when your back pain starts interfering with your daily activities. Spinal fusion surgery can relieve your back pain. Your orthopedic surgeon will fuse together the adjoining vertebrae during spinal fusion surgery. These fused vertebrae will form a single, solid mass of bone.

Your orthopedic surgeon recommends spinal fusion surgery when you have a problem with your neck or back and when you injure intervertebral disks vertebrae or suffer from scoliosis.

Bone Grafting Surgery

A filler or scaffold for the growth of new bone is called a bone graft. During bone grafting surgery, your orthopedic surgeon may use bone from another part of your body in order to strengthen or repair your damaged or diseased bone. Your surgeon may also use a bone from another person to repair your damaged bone.

Carol Owen

A+ experience from start to finish. The staff in the waiting area are very capable and personable. The wait time is short and my most recent visit was my third time there with the third specialist. I have been a patient of Dr. Frisella, Dr. Glissom and now Dr. Fallon. I always rave about their knowledge, expertise and care. I recommend them to all my friends, and give them a five star recommendation to all!

Alma Gayle

Everyone was great and Dr Spezia is my kind of Doctor! Thorough, and a great upbeat personality!
